Many of these photographs of contemporary Chinese art work were taken in galleries and exhibit spaces of Factory 798 in Beijing, an important and dynamic area, with a multitude of art galleries, bars, cafes, performance & event/happening spaces. Other galleries, added recently, profile Shanghai's art scene and other exhibits in Beijing, such as the rather oblique (for want of a better word) Millenium Museum 世纪坛展览馆.
Galleries include photographs of
- Advertisement, posters & signs in 798
- A couple of major exhibits, such as
1. the Hyper-Design Biennale 2006 in Shanghai
2. The Wall (an important exhibition of Avant-garde Art)
3. A solo exhibition by Li Luming in the Brewery Factory
4. Works displayed at Red Gate Gallery (Beijing)
As part of a research project, I have also put together a specific gallery of materials depicting "urban art", entitled "Chinese artists and the City". This is a fascinating subject which IMHO deserves close attention.
The latest gallery is dedicated to the new phenomenon of graffiti in China.
As an aside, over the past five years, I have seen 798 develop from a small concentration of galleries into a national and international art center. It occured to me (in fact I was told by insiders and friends) on my last visit that many accomplished artists have taken leave (or flight) from the masses, and that the overall quality of the exhibited work is somewhat in decline.
